Where to stay in Montepulciano

Explore Piazza Grande. It’s the heart of Montepulciano. Standing in the middle of the square, you are surrounded by stunning Renaissance buildings, including the Palazzo Comunale and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Climb the tower of the Palazzo Comunale for panoramic views of the countryside.


Visit the Cantines. Montepulciano is dotted with historic wine cellars, many of which are open to the public for tours and tastings. Cantina de' Ricci and Contucci Cantine are two of the most famous, offering a fascinating glimpse into the town's winemaking tradition.


Discover the Temple of San Biagio. Just outside the town walls, this beautiful Renaissance church is an architectural gem. The serene setting and stunning design make it a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts.


Take a Cooking Class. Immerse yourself in Tuscan cuisine by taking a cooking class. Learn how to make traditional ribollita soup, using fresh, local ingredients. The Il Sasso Language School offers great cooking classes in Montepulciano. (It’s also a great place to do an Italian immersive class.)


Day Trip to Pienza and Montalcino. Montepulciano’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby Tuscan towns like Pienza, known for its pecorino cheese, and Montalcino, famous for Brunello wine. Both towns offer rich history, delicious food, and stunning views.






Where to eat in Montepulciano


Montepulciano is home to several outstanding restaurants where you can savor traditional Tuscan cuisine and local specialties. Here are some of the best restaurants to try in Montepulciano:


Probably the most famous, celebrity sighting place to eat is Cafe Poliziano.  Inside you’ll find patrons sipping coffee and vino, devouring their gorgeous pastries & Tuscan dishes all while taking in the vibe of an art nouveau dining room & terrace with sweeping valley views. First stop. This! 


A must-visit for meat lovers, Osteria Acquacheta is famous for its Florentine steak (bistecca alla fiorentina). The atmosphere is rustic and lively, with communal tables and a warm, welcoming vibe. The menu is simple but focuses on high-quality ingredients. Reservations are highly recommended due to its popularity.


Le Logge del Vignola is an elegant restaurant offering a modern take on traditional Tuscan cuisine. Located in the historic center, Le Logge del Vignola is known for its refined dishes, creative presentations, and a carefully curated wine list featuring many local labels. Some specialties to consider are the pigeon breast, truffle dishes, and artisanal desserts. Reservations recommended.


Situated near the Temple of San Biagio, La Grotta is an upscale restaurant known for its refined Tuscan cuisine and beautiful setting in a 16th-century building. The restaurant offers an intimate dining experience with a menu that highlights seasonal ingredients. Be sure to try the rabbit with truffles and the homemade ravioli. Reservations recommended.


For a more casual experience, Enoteca La Dolce Vita is an excellent choice. It’s both a wine bar and a restaurant, offering a wide selection of local wines paired with traditional Tuscan dishes. It’s a great spot for lunch or a light dinner. They do amazing charcuterie boards.


Trattoria di Cagnano is a cozy and traditional trattoria in the heart of Montepulciano. They offer hearty Tuscan dishes in a casual setting. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. The wild boar stew is the local recommendation.







How to get to Montepulciano


The nearest train station to Montepulciano is Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station. From there you can take a local bus and reach the town in about 30 minutes.


It’s probably easiest to visit Montepulciano in your own rental car. You can reach the town from Rome or Florence in under 2 hours. If you are traveling by car, be sure to ask your hotel about parking ahead of your arrival. Having a car will also enable you to visit the surrounding area while during your stay.
