Jane's Guide to San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a charming medieval hill town located in the Tuscany region of Italy. It's often referred to as the "Medieval Manhattan" because of its impressive skyline dominated by ancient stone towers. The town is perched on a hilltop, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with vineyards, olive groves, and rolling hills.

Enclosed by well-preserved 13th-century walls, San Gimignano is known for its medieval architecture. The narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings, quaint shops, and inviting cafes. The town's centerpiece is the Piazza del Duomo, where you'll find the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, a Romanesque cathedral famous for its beautiful frescoes. You can also visit a gelato shop that claims to have Italy’s very best gelato. You’ll have to be the judge of that.

One of the most distinctive features of San Gimignano is its towers. Originally, there were 72 towers built by noble families as symbols of wealth and power, but today, 14 of these towers still stand, each with its unique character and history.

San Gimignano is also known for its local products, such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine with a long history, and saffron, which has been cultivated in the area for centuries. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional cultural and architectural significance.

The atmosphere in San Gimignano is a blend of history and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking to experience the essence of Tuscany.
